Every year, flood season will normally come from June to October. These days, rains often appear in the afternoon more frequency. Therefore, MEC engineer team would like to emphasize the importance of an efficient MEP system in extreme weather. In order to have a qualified shelter, a building not only needs structural strength, it must also keep a suitable MEP system for occupancy. Especially, in this article, MEC engineers will focus on electrical and plumbing system.

One of the main challenges during a flood is keeping building systems in operation. Since power grids are often disrupted in extreme weather conditions so our engineers will recommend 2 options to ensure power supply during a blackout, which are natural gas generator or microturbine. If the gas generator is installed above the reach of floodwater, it can continue operating as long as the gas supply is available. The microturbine model uses a gas turbine and a permanent magnetic synchronous generator (PMSG), which produces AC voltage for occupancy.

On the other hand, a building that uses a booster pump may be worthless since a water supply is not guaranteed if the unit and its control system are flooded. An effective measure is having a secondary water supply that meets some conditions such as independence from the main booster pump and access from floors above the reach of floodwater. During a flood, preventing sewage backflow is extremely important or the conditions inside a building can become very unhealthy in a short time. To improve flood resilience, a building must be equipped with adequate backflow preventers.

The resilience of buildings in the flood season can be improved with smart design ideas. MEC engineer team always strive to research smart methods for MEP internal system that can cope with any extreme weather conditions so that our clients will always feel assured with our products and comprehensive services.
